📖 Story Backstory
The introduction and setting of the world, including its history.
The galaxy is governed by the Stellarian Consortium, a corporate-governmental entity that rose from the ashes of the old Federation. The Consortium values order, productivity, and control above all else. Decades ago, a latent psychic potential began to manifest across various species, an ability to manipulate energy and matter with the mind, known colloquially as 'Aether-weaving.' Fearing this unpredictable power, the Consortium established the Zenith Astral Academies. Officially, these elite institutions identify and nurture the gifted. In reality, they are gilded cages, designed to sequester psionically-active individuals from a young age and mold them into specialized assets for the Consortium's military and intelligence branches. Students live in a controlled bubble of 'casual school life,' complete with social clubs, academic rivalries, and exams, largely unaware that their performance determines their future role as a living weapon, an interrogator, or a disposable pawn.
👥 Characters (4)
Characters in this story. You will choose who to play as when you start.
Kaelen
Protagonist
Recruited from a mid-tier corporate habitat on a smog-choked industrial world, Kaelen's Aether-weaving gift was a ticket out of a life of factory work. Now, they see it more as a chain. Kaelen's primary motivation is to keep their head down, pass their exams with acceptable scores, and secure a quiet, non-combat assignment upon graduation. However, a deep-seated curiosity and an inability to ignore inconsistencies may prove to be their undoing.
Seraphina Valerius
As a member of the influential Valerius family, who hold a major stake in the Stellarian Consortium, Seraphina is a true believer in the system. She sees the Consortium as the only thing preventing galactic chaos and believes the gifted have a solemn duty to serve. She is one of the top students at the Academy, driven by a fierce ambition to prove herself worthy of her family's name. She despises weakness and laziness, viewing them as insults to the privilege of attending Zenith.
Jax
Jax is a recent transfer from a lesser-known academy in the Outer Rim, and his records are suspiciously sparse. He is a powerful Aether-weaver but seems utterly unimpressed by Zenith's prestige, treating the strict rules with open disdain. He is a loner, often found in the forgotten corners of the station. He is searching for something or someone within the academy, and he may be connected to anti-Consortium resistance cells.
Instructor Anya Sharma
Neutral
A former top graduate of Zenith herself, Anya was assigned to a teaching post rather than a field position due to a 'psychic instability' noted in her final evaluation. In truth, she harbors deep misgivings about the Consortium's methods. She sees the potential in her students and quietly tries to arm them with the knowledge to survive the system, teaching not just the curriculum but also the subtext and loopholes within it.
⚡ Key Events (7)
The Practical Exam
The instructor, a stern woman named Proctor Valeriana, announces the start of the practical exam. On each student's desk, a dozen small, crystalline fragments materialize. The task is to assemble them into a complex, floating lattice structure using only telekinetic Aether-weaving within a time limit. The structure's stability and precision will be graded. This is a foundational test of control and finesse.
The Forbidden Archive
Following a cryptic hint—perhaps a data-chip passed from Jax or an overheard conversation—the protagonist finds a way to bypass a security lockout on a terminal in the Academy's main library. This grants access to a hidden, 'decommissioned' archive. Within the fragmented and corrupted files are unsettling reports: lists of students who 'washed out' but were not sent home, analyses of Aether-weaving for 'subject pacification,' and heavily redacted schematics for something called 'Project Chimera.'
Resonance Spike
A piercing alarm suddenly blares through the Academy, followed by a station-wide lockdown announcement: 'Containment breach detected in Residential Spire Gamma. All students remain in quarters. This is not a drill.' Through a viewport or a hacked news feed, the protagonist witnesses the arrival of Consortium Enforcers in sleek, black armor. They move with terrifying efficiency, storming the spire where a student reportedly suffered a psionic breakdown. The incident is resolved quickly, brutally, and silently, and the official report later describes it as a 'power conduit malfunction.'
The Sim-Deck Challenge
The Academy's Simulation Deck is a popular hangout spot where students can engage in psionic combat drills against AI or each other in controlled environments. Seraphina, aiming to reassert her dominance after the practical exam, publicly challenges Kaelen to a scored duel. Winning would earn bragging rights and respect, but losing to a high-profile student like Seraphina would be a public humiliation.
A Quiet Word
After a class, Instructor Sharma asks Kaelen to stay behind, ostensibly to discuss their academic performance. In the empty classroom, she speaks in low tones, referencing a historical Aether-weaver who used their abilities for 'harmonization' rather than combat. She gives Kaelen a data-chip containing 'supplementary reading material' that is not on the official syllabus—essays on the philosophical and ethical uses of psionic power.
The Unity Gala
The Academy hosts its annual Unity Gala, a formal event celebrating the Consortium's vision. The main hall is decorated lavishly, food and non-alcoholic beverages are abundant, and students are encouraged to socialize under the watchful eyes of instructors and Observer Drones. During the Headmaster's speech about duty and sacrifice, Jax suggests slipping away to the maintenance tunnels to access an unmonitored network node.
Contraband Sweep
Without warning, Academy Enforcers conduct a surprise inspection of the residential spires. Students are confined to common areas while their rooms are meticulously searched for unauthorized technology, data, or other contraband. The tension is palpable as students worry about what might be found. The discovery of a hidden item could lead to immediate expulsion or worse.
